The Palladian House was built in the late 18th century by John Carr of York for Francis Sykes who made a fortune in the service of the East India Company. The interiors & gardens were completed in early Victorian times by which time the house, set within 400 acres of parkland, had been bought by a Liberal MP, James Morrison.   But the house stood empty & neglected throughout the first half of the 20th century until it was bought & lavishly restored by Lord & Lady Iliffe. You will be able to discover just how successful they were when you tour the house.

In 2005, Basildon House featured in the screen version of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley.

Basildon Park is also the home of the Brindsley Ford Collection: a vast exhibition of art works, including 17th-20th century English & European paintings, 18th century English & European furniture & much more. This Collection is not always open to the public but will be available for us to view on the day. The gardens were originally designed as a pleasure ground but became derelict, until the Iliffes embarked on the restoration of such elements as the Umbrello Seat & the Terrace. There are also new additions, such as Lady Iliffe’s rose garden.

Refreshments are available in the Tea Room, providing morning, lunchtime & afternoon refreshments at your own expense. In addition, there is a shop in the stable yard. The coach will depart at 4.00pm.

Charge: £18.00 for members and £20.00 for non-members. Non-NT members will have to pay £11 admission charge on arrival. Please remember to bring your NT cards
